Don’t let jaw pain and stiffness become the norm for you.jaw pain

Does it often feel like your jaws tire easily? Do you hear a popping or clicking noise often when opening your mouth? Do you find that your jaws cause you pain and discomfort, particularly when first waking up in the morning? If so, then our St. Charles, IL, family dentists Dr. Edmund Lipskis, Dr. Lynn Lipskis, and Dr. Dana Lipskis have the answers you’ve been looking for.

What could be causing my jaw pain?

While there are certainly quite a few issues that could be to blame, in a lot of cases jaw pain is the result of a condition known as TMJ disorder. TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint and this joint is responsible for connecting the jaws to the skull. This joint is responsible for all jaw movements from speaking to chewing. Of course, if you are dealing with localized pain is this region then it could be due to a dysfunction with the TMJ.

What causes TMJ disorder?

It isn’t always possible to pinpoint the root cause of TMJ disorder; however, there are many factors that could put someone at risk for this problem. Common causes include bad habits such as teeth grinding and jaw clenching, a jaw misalignment, arthritis, anxiety/stress or an injury to the jaw.

How should I treat my TMJ disorder?

First and foremost, it’s important to determine whether your symptoms are truly due to a TMJ disorder or if there is something else going on. The cause of your symptoms will determine exactly what treatment options are right for you. In most cases, TMJ disorder will go away by itself. Of course, the best thing you can do is manage your symptoms in the meantime to reduce its impact on your daily life. Common conservative treatment options include:

  • Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDS)
  • Stretching and strengthening jaw exercises
  • Cutting food into easy, bite-sized pieces
  • Find outlets to reduce stress (e.g. meditation; yoga)

In more serious cases a dental splint may be recommended by our St. Charles, IL, dentists to improve the alignment of the jaws. With the proper care, most people will see these symptoms reduced.

Are you dealing with jaw pain in St. Charles, IL? If so, let St. Charles Family Dentistry get the bottom of your symptoms. Call our office today to schedule an evaluation.

Another busy and exciting month is in full swing at St. Charles Family Dentistry! Everyone is in good spirits with the warmer weather and sunny days. Here’s what is happening around the office…

During the first week of April, Dr. Krysta, Mel, Angela, and Pam went to sunny Scottsdale, AZ to attend the Team Training Institutes’ quarterly Mastermind meeting. We were able to participate in a group discussion with seven other dental practices from around the country. The meeting was led by Dr. John Meis and Wendy Briggs. We were able to bring back some great ideas to strengthen our dental team and to better care for our patients! What a great group to be part of!

Wednesday, April 10thwas hygienist Heather H.’s birthday! It was a very special birthday so we had a little celebration for her the next day. If you were lucky enough to be her patient that day, you couldn’t miss her festive operatory decorated in pink and black. She had a blast, as did the whole office!

This weekend, Drs. Lynn and Ed, are in fabulous Hollywood, California. Dr. Ed is lecturing with Dr. Olmos and Dr. Mahoney on TMD and how orthodontics are involved in the treatment process. If I had to guess, they are all having a little fun out there on the side.

Next Thursday night, April 18th, we are celebrating the second anniversary of the TMJ and Sleep Centre of Chicago! As many of you know, this practice is Dr. Lynn’s practice that is located across the parking lot from our main general dentistry office. Dr. Olmos will be presenting a lecture that evening to many area physicians, chiropractors, dentists, and other health care professionals about TMD and how it relates to their practices. That lecture will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn in St. Charles, Thursday, April 18that 6:15PM.

Next weekend is the fifth of six sessions in Dr. Olmos’ Advanced TMJ residency series that we have been hosting at our office. Dentists and their staffs will be returning to St. Charles for two days of advanced training in diagnosing and treating patients with TMD. It is always a pleasure to host those doctors and hear lectures from Dr. Olmos.

So, busy all around but of course our number one priority is always OUR PATIENTS! We wouldn’t be able to do all this fun stuff without our awesome patients. Our doctors, hygienists, and staff are always striving to provide the best care for our guests. So thank you everyone for being AWESOME!

February has proven to be a busy month at St. Charles Family Dentistry!

We started the month off with “Dentist with a Heart” on February 7th. We had excellent turn out and everyone had a wonderful time providing free dental care for those in need. We ended up seeing over forty patients during our four-hour session! Three dentists, three hygienists, five assistants, and two front desk receptionists worked together to make this event such a success. We are already looking forward to next year’s event.

This past weekend we hosted a two-day session of continuing education about TMD diagnosis and therapy. This was the third session in the six-part series led by Dr. Steve Olmos. Doctors from across the nation convened in St. Charles to listen to lectures by Dr. Olmos and to participate in hands-on patient care. The next two-day session will be hosted at our office in Mid-March.

This coming weekend is the annual mid-winter meeting hosted by the Chicago Dental Society at McCormick Place in Chicago. Dr. Krysta will be attending CE courses and walking the convention floor to learn about the most current dental techniques and technology. Drs. Lynn and Ed will be jumping across the pond where they will be attending some lectures in London. A lot of learning, but also a lot of fun to be had this weekend!

We have had a great response with our in-office whitening special and have decided to extend it through February. The special is in-office bleaching for $199 (regularly $499) and includes custom home whitening trays! It’s really quite the deal!
